Since 2015 I have been teaching students in the underserved communities of West Palm Beach and Belle Glade, Florida, how to read using the most basic methodology of Orton Gillingham. As Director of Literacy at Carver Christian Academy and Urban Youth Impact, I created whole group and individual lessons to increase literacy for all students including those with dyslexia and English as a second language. Many of my individual and small group students were able to increase their levels by 1-2 grades in one year. The population I served(120 students yearly) came in reading around 17% and were performing at an average of 67%-77% over a seven year period. I love teaching reading and have worked with students individually, in small groups, classrooms, and through volunteering.
